A great set of illustrations in these ads from KesselsKramer, Netherlands (which feel directly inspired from those Davy Crockett-type storybooks from the 60s), demonstrating how Bavaria beer is the perfect celebration of true manhood (roar ! grr.)

Telus wireless opened its first virtual boutique inside the popular "Second Life" world, last week. Second Life inhabitants can now visit the shop (which looks and feels like an actual Telus shop, retaining all the brand's personality) and get virtual cellphones with special features for their characters.

I've visited the shop in SL and it's quite a nice piece of architecture, featuring a wide, colourful area inside, some cellphones on display, and a veranda on the side with a virtual espresso machine (!). While I'm not sure virtual espressos taste like the real thing, they sure do the Telus brand some good.

Check out Second Life here, and visit the Telus shop!

Coca-Cola Zero (0)

Wednesday, August 30, 2006 by , under , , , , , , , , , ,

Check out the new Coke Zero spots. While I'm not a big fan of the TV work, I think the viral videos "Can We Sue Us?" with the lawyers are worth a good chuckle. And, well... okay. The TV ad with the black guy made me laff. Oh yea, and while you're at it, also check out the customer call pranks played by Coke on their own employees. Ghghee-hee-hee.

Check out the Coke Zero Website for all of the above, and more.

So, generally a nice campaign. Nice. Niiiiice, nice-nice-nice. (*yawn* then *stretches* don't ask too much from me, it's still early in the morning). From the agency of TEH FUTURE, Crispin Porter + Bogusky. (Thanks, I Have An Idea!)

| edit post

I like this project. I think there's a crazy advertising idea waiting to happen here. Karolina Sobecka had this idea of cars projecting videos of runnings animals, whose speed depends upon the speed of the car. What's more, the projector detects if there's a moving object (pedestrian or else) on the course, and alters the image to that of another animal (symbolically corresponding to the pedestrian's "avatar"). Inspiring. Check out the webpage here (featuring a Quicktime showing the whole thing in motion).

Great ad. Too bad there's the tiny little "Don't forget to buy it" under the logo. That sounds like a client joke. A client who's like your uncle. An uncle who repeats his ill-witted joke twice or three times, until you emit a faint, yellow laugh. And then he reminds you he's a client. And he says "no seriously, add it".

This is a classic. I devote my time making sure every generation sees this. I cannot say enough about this 10 mins of animation. It's brutal. Watch this now. Probably the inspiration behind most of The Electric Company stuff (see below).

| edit post

I'm barely old enough to remember these little 2 mins educational snippets from ABC: The Electric Company. Funky flavor, great tunage, I mostly learned my english watching these and Sesame Street (my native language is ze french). The Electric Company was about getting kids ready for the real world. And boy did they do a great job. This clip features Steady Freddy the Freak Who Loves French Fries and Frankenstein, in one of the most powerfully reminiscent display of 70s TV, back in the days when being caught smoking a chairleg meant you should share.

And another one: It Really Blew My Mind. Feel the groove, cat, feel the groove. Planning to get lost in Harlem? Make sure you know the lingo.

And the last one, because u know u love it: The Signage Song. Delightfully semiologic.

Morgan Freeman doing a 70's Listerine commercial, back when the thing was incredibly extra-spicy. "It's got the taste people hate, twice a day". And to think that, nowadays, they have the "softer", lightly-minted Listerine. Man, Morgan Freeman sure was a tough guy.

PS3s against cancer (0)

Thursday, August 24, 2006 by , under , , , , , , , , ,

Sony and Standford University have announced that the PS3 will be able to participate in a worldwide cancer grid research program titled Cure@PS3, due the the awesome computing power found inside the console's revolutionnary chip.

Distributed computing, or "Grid computing", "...breaks down complex computing problems into small steps that can be solved in parallel by thousands or even millions of machines at once. ", according to Wired.

This means that when you leave your PS3 on, it will crunch down formulas and numbers pertaining to cancer research, and send the info back to a master computer. Says electro^plankton: "...To put that into perspective, lets just say the PS3 sells as many units as the PS2's has sold to date. That's over 60 million PS3's number crunching away, far more powerful than any super computer at any facility."

I often dream of getting me one of these babies when they get out, but their reported december launch price of 600$ makes me reconsider. BUT NOW THAT I KNOW PS3s CAN HELP SOLVE CANCER, MAN! Maybe I can find a kind and generous spot in my heart.

(Thanks electro^plankton!)

(Wieden+Kennedy made) Here's a new spot for the Nike "SB"(skateboarding) brand category, featuring rising legend Paul Rodriguez Jr. (notedly toted "P-Rod").

The Nike SB line of shoes is Nike's first attempt (from my knowledge) at creating rideworthy skateboarding shoes, launched in 2005. About time they shifted their aim, if you ask me. I thought that most of Nike's production was going to be stuck in the basketball-bling-bling look forever. (image from WestSideSkateShop.com)

Berlin Ohne-Scheiss (0)

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 by , under

Berlin Ohne-Scheiss or "Berlin Without Shit" is a project created by a graphic designer living in Berlin, Alejandro Lecuna. Its goal: to attract attention upon Berlin's most prominent dog poo problem. Here's an excerpt from the press release you may find on Alejandro's site, Lecu.de, in the "blurred" section.

"The Ohne Scheiss Project is a grass-roots effort focused on arousing solidarity between pedestrians to help them overcome the dog shit left by some Berliner dog owners. The idea is to mark and limit dog shit with florescent shapes, so that other pedestrians become aware of the potential danger ahead. The concerned pedestrian needs only to rip off the shape and lay it on the sidewalk so it encircles the offending area. Allegoric and visually pleasing shapes make use of popular humor to express personal opinions about the issue in discussion (holy shit! hot-shit, dirty-shit, shit!...)".

Very scatologic. I like the idea. I love the pictures.

This could make a great advergame for Nike's current "More Air. More World" campaign. Actually, it'd be perfect. I hope the folks at Wieden & Kennedy are watching. But now that I've said it, they probably won't.

StumbleUpon (0)

Monday, August 21, 2006 by , under , ,

Are you of those who think terms like "surfing the web" or "navigating" or "exploring the cyberspace" are way, way out? Well, you're absolutely right. The cool thing to do now is "stumbling". Stumbling upon webpages gives you the bragging right to say you've found the coolest thing, aaaall by yourself. Well, a small company called "StumbleUpon" decided they would help you do some wicked stumbling. And thanks to them, soon people will be able to say "Hey, I've Stumbled this today".

The system is pretty simple. You (freely) register to StumbleUpon, and download their toolbar. (I personally hate software that adds toolbars to my browser, but this is different. Way different.) Then, you click a few boxes identifying your main areas of interest. Say, you like "sports" and "movies", and also ummm, "food". And you're done for the registering part.

Now, the fun part. Everytime you click the little "Stumble!" button on your toolbar, you're presented with a random original and interesting webpage, featuring content of your preselected preference. And you can be certain it will be original and interesting because it has been chosen by users like YOU, who thought it was original and interesting. And of course if you have a webpage you recommend for stumbling, you can propose it to StumbleUpon, and they will add it to their Stumbling database. It's that good. It's that simple.

This means GOOD WEBBAGE GUARANTEED. Everytime you fall on a new page, you can vote if you like it, or don't like it. If too many people don't like the choice, it gets flushed out.

Folks, while this is not a search engine or the next Google, I predict it will become VERY BIG. I could go on talking about the possibilities of such an engine, but it's early and I didn't have breakfast yet. But, check out StumbleUpon rrrright now. It's worth a download.

The New Nike Air Experience 1

Thursday, August 03, 2006 by , under

Check out the new Nike Air website, which was put online recently. It's nothing short of flabbergasting. This wins (and by far) my award for best overall website ever. Mainly, the Nike site is rich in interactive full-motion video, seamlessly embedded in the viewing rhythm. The browsing is nothing but a seat-of-your-eyes's-pants experience, putting you exactly at the core of Nike's new zen philosophy : "More Air, More World".

Starting with the theme " Everything You've Never Seen Is Just Beyond Where You Always Stop", The site features two main sections: the running side and the ball side. Each section has you creating "more world" for the sportsman/sportswoman shown, with the help of your keyboard. Of course you can explore Nike's new line of Air Shoes, download wallpapers and more.

Respect and cookies to Big Spaceship in NYC, who created this jewel.

Cool New Advertising Blog (0)

I'm always looking out for other cool advertising blogs, and this is one I found particularly worthy of my attention (such an arrogant bastard) : "How Did You Come Up With It" is about finding those creatives who racked up trophies at Cannes, and have them talk about how they came up with their idea in the first place. The blog is held by Alex Beker, an art director from Toronto.

So far he's got an interesting collection of several articles, notedly from Santo Buenos Aires, BBH London, Taxi Canada, Saatchi & Saatchi, JWT India and FCB Johannesburg, among others -- all of whom share the thinking behind their Cannes success story. Motivating.
